Moving towards conceptual thinking
In order to change an educational institution we all know that you need to start at the top. A great article that you might want to pass on to your school board out of the American School Board Journal this month.
Just a taste of the article for you:
Studies have shown that many of our high schools, even those that boastof high graduation and college-attendance rates, rarely demand thatstudents use information, skills, and technologies to construct newknowledge and to solve complex problems, integrate concepts and ideasacross disciplines, communicate effectively orally and in writing, andwork in diverse groups. Yet this is precisely the kind of learningstudents need for a Conceptual Age. Students themselves tell us thatthey want to be held to high standards but that they find their highschools boring, unchallenging, and disconnected from their lives.
